Glass Industry

Lead Oxide

Decorative lead crystal glass is one of the most attractive forms in which lead is used.

Normally added in the form of lead oxide at 24-36%, it adds lustre, density and brilliance to the glass, giving it the characteristic ring associated with lead crystal and enabling decorative patterns to be cut easily.

Lead is also used in optical glasses (eg telescopes, binoculars), ophthalmic glass (eg spectacles), electrical glass (eg lamp tubing) and radiation protection glasses (eg for windows for radiation remote handling boxes, TV tubes).

Zinc Oxide

In the manufacture of glass, Zinc Oxide improves chemical resistance and imparts high stability against deformation under stress. It also lowers thermal expansion, giving rise to glass products with a high resistance to thermal shock.

Zinc Oxide is used in specialist glass products, for example high-grade fluoride opal glass to increase opacity, whiteness and lustre. In optical glasses, the presence of Zinc Oxide reduces the tendency to crystallise on cooling.

Zinc Oxide can also improve the ease of working with the glass during manufacture.
